64% Haryana women sexually harassed while commuting

CHANDIGARH: Women in Haryana are most prone to sexual harassment while commuting to school, college or office and back. These findings of a Haryana Police survey show that around 64% eve-teasing take place during travel and 85.8% women in the state are afraid of being troubled most of the time, always or occasionally .
According to the survey, majority of women have found buses to be the most unsafe. Maximum respondents also felt vulnerable while travel ling in train, by three-wheeler or walking, but still found it safer than going by bus.
This online survey was carried out from May 2-17 and included 28,539 respondents, 40% of whom were women. Majority of respondents were in the 20-40 age group.
As many as 42% women found eve-teasers dangerous and criminal, 40% saw them as irritating and only 18% perceived them to be harmless. The survey was conducted by the crime against women (CAW) branch of the state police to assess the nature and scale of the problem in the state and to devise an action plan in the light of ground realities.
On the safety front, 27.5% respondents rated Haryana as quite safe, 40.6% thought it was safer than neighbouring states, 19.6% felt it was as bad as neighbouring states while 12.3% found Haryana to be quite unsafe.
O P Singh, additional director general of police (HR & Litigation), Haryana, who had planned and conducted the survey , said it had provided valuable insights into the extent of the problem in the state.
