Peon Rapes 4-Year-Old Girl in School Washroom

Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a four-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a peon in Mumbai in Malad’s ICSE Board School. The police arrested the accused, reported news agency PTI. The child’s mother filed a complaint against the culprit on August 5. Senior police inspector Rajaram Vhanmane of Dindoshi police station said that the peon allegedly sexually assaulted the girl inside a washroom of the school between August 1 and 4.
“We subsequently identified and apprehended the accused yesterday,” Vhanmane said, adding the accused was produced in a local court which remanded him in police custody till August 11. On Tuesday, many parents gathered outside the school and protested against the management. “The parents want assurance of safety of their children,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-12) Vinay Rathod said. “Why is the principal quiet? She has to take responsibility. What did the class teacher do when the child did not come back from the toilet soon? We want a solution. I cannot send my daughter to this school,” said Sheetal Mehta, mother of a class five student, as quoted by Mumbai Mirror.
“If the student does not return to the class for a long time, how can the teacher not notice? The management wants to hush up the matter,” said another worried parent Indrajeet Singh. The police charged the man with rape under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), informed Senior Inspector Rajaram Vhanmane. The police are examining school’s CCTV footage from August 1 to August 5 between 11.30 am to 1.30 pm, during which the alleged offence took place.
The school’s principal told the worried and angry parents who were protesting that the school manager said they would replace all the male staff inside the school building with female staff, including PT, computer and dance teacher. The school will not allow the male security guards posted at the gate to come inside the building. More CCTV cameras will be installed, the school said. When the protest intensified, BJP MLA Ashish Shelar visited the school and made an aborted attempt to broker peace. Parents, however, heckled the school manager and a teacher who denied the incident ever took place.
