Three held in plantain grove rape case

Thiruvananthapuram: Three residents of Perumkadavila were arrested in connection with the rape of a 38-year-old woman at a plantain grove in Marayamuttom, rural police said on Tuesday.
While Arun, 21, and Vipin, 19, were directly involved in the crime, police said Vijeesh, also aged 19, was arrested for aiding one of the alleged rapists.
The alleged incident took place around 5.45pm on December 30. The survivor was returning home from work when she was followed, dragged into the plantain grove next to the road and violated.
Police said Arun and Vipin and were sitting on a culvert—their usual hangout—when the woman passed by. They followed her and allegedly committed the crime, despite the woman’s cries for help and resistance.
A couple, passing by on a motorcycle, heard the screams and alerted the police, who rushed to the scene and chased down Vipin. Arun, however, managed to give police the slip.
Neyyattinkara circle inspector S M Pradeep Kumar said Arun was hiding in a forest region at Manalivila. Though the police found the area where he was hiding by tracking his mobile phone signals, they could not find his exact hiding place. Police said Vijeesh provided him food.
Arun was nabbed when he reached home to collect his clothes before fleeing the state.
Police registered a case of under Section 376 IPC as per latest amendments in the laws related to rape. All the three accused were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
