Youth held for rape after 13-year-old found pregnant

MUMBAI: The Charkop police arrested a 24-year-old man on Friday for the rape of a minor girl, who is now more than six months pregnant and plans to move the Supreme Court for permission for an abortion.
The accused (not being named to protect the girl’s identity) was a partner in a snacks business run by the 13-year-old’s father.
The teen’s family discovered her pregnancy during a visit to a suburban doctor to find out why she was becoming “obese”. The doctor advised an ultrasound scan, which found that she was 27 weeks pregnant and, therefore, beyond the 20-week limit under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act.
“The accused had been living in a room rented out by the survivor’s father for the past five years. He was well-acquainted with the girl. He often had meals at their home with her family and he hailed from the same town as them,” said a police officer.
The police claimed he took the girl to a room owned by her father, where snacks were prepared, on multiple occasions and got physical with her. He was not aware of the pregnancy.
“We had registered a case under provisions of IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act on August 9 based on a statement given by the girl’s mother. The girl was in shock and had clammed up. We made inquiries in her neighbourhood and quizzed friends and family, before zeroing in on the accused. He was produced before a sessions court on Friday and was remanded in police custody till August 16,” the officer said.
The incident has come to light merely two weeks after a 10-year-old Chandigarh girl was denied abortion, triggering a debate on her right to terminate the unwanted pregnancy.
